  1. A Dutch possession in the 17th Century and in 1815 Guyana became
  2. a British colony.  Shortly after British control, imported Indian
  3. slaves began to outnumber indigenous African slaves and created
  4. ethnic tensions that continue to exist.  On May 26, 1966 Guyana
  5. became independent.  From independence to 1970, Venezuela claimed
  6. the western half of Guyana and in 1982 resumed its claim. 
  7. Guyana's border with Suriname is also disputed. Most of the
  8. economy is nationalized and has remained primarily depressed.
