A Dutch possession in the 17th Century and in 1815 Guyana became
a British colony. Shortly after British control, imported Indian
slaves began to outnumber indigenous African slaves and created
ethnic tensions that continue to exist. On May 26, 1966 Guyana
became independent. From independence to 1970, Venezuela claimed
the western half of Guyana and in 1982 resumed its claim.
Guyana's border with Suriname is also disputed. Most of the
economy is nationalized and has remained primarily depressed.
The Port Kaituma ambush of United States Representative Leo J.
Ryan and others investigating mistreatment of America followers
of the Rev. Jim Jones' People's Temple cult, triggered a mass
suicide of 911 cultists in the Guyana jungle on November 18,
1978. @
